Milestone Magic

Take a good look because, considering the sequence of events over the last few days, we can now say  that this little horned creature is certainly our good luck omen. I found him while I was deeply embedded in a last-push clearing tirade that would complete the finishing preparation for our excavating project. Thats right... it's finally happening.

A few days ago, we were sitting at a cafe, high on craigslist, when we made a few calls (again) to local excavating services. After having had such a hard time hiring the right person for the job, we were ecstatic that we had finally made this fated appointment. Literally, three days later, we sit here in Kona, proud inhabiters of a plot of land that has a driveway and house clearing! Magic.

Lets back up, though, so we can show you some more of our prep-work charades.

Byron got feisty with the chainsaw and finished breaking up the deadwood that was cluttering the front of the property. We had been waiting until the last day to actually clear the front area to the street and complete the driveway entrance.

Altogether, it was a very gratifying project.

We had a little more fun with mossy facial fur.

And we took some time to marvel at all the beautiful little intricacies that make up the land around us.

Like the spiral birth of a fern frond and the heart of the fallen hapu'u trunk.

The next morning came-- we ate a big breakfast and got prepared for the excavator operator, Beau, to arrive.

Byron even decided to bake a delicious loaf of hops and honey bread on our little wood stove to celebrate.

We gorged ourselves as we peeked at the action through the trees.

After all was said and done, we stood out front of our property to check out the street view. We beamed at the new entrance to our home in a gloriously surreal cloud.

The project that we have been in the process of executing over the past month that we have been here had finally been completed! It felt like a huge milestone moment for us.

This is the clearing in the back of the property that we designated for the house site. It is a crazy feeling to walk across it without the stumps and vine carnage that overtook it before Beau worked his magic.

This beautifully placed natural arc over the entryway for our house site  is highlighted by the newly leveled ground.

We love to imagine what this area will look like when the house has been built!

At the end of this exciting day, we kick back with a tall bottle of water, the Kona sunset reflecting in our eyes, full of wonder.

  2. I'm so excited to see that your excavator arrived! Can't wait to see your geodesic dome developing. (If that is, in fact, what you are still choosing to build.) Thrilling times!! Love you!
